Mata Akademisi, Milenianews.com – Imagine you are currently writing a letter, you finish writing, put it inside an envelope and finally leave it in the mailbox, suddenly you receive a text, you reply almost immediately. What you may notice is in that short time span of you texting, the letter was stagnant. This shows just how technology has changed our communication. However, just how has technology changed our way of interacting with another?
To see just how technology has changed our way of interacting with another, we must compare how people had interacted in the past and in the present. One of the most obvious comparisons to make would be letters against texts. With letters, people had to wait an arduously long time, as it must be transported physically. This meant it required work by real living creatures to move these letters from one place to another. This means these creatures would also have to be taken care of during the journey, as they need resources themselves to survive, which will cut into the valuable time needed to transport the letters. Texting defeats this problem by no longer relying on living creatures, rather using electromagnetics waves to transport information worldwide almost instantaneously. While this meant people no longer had to wait months on end to not only send a letter but receive a reply as the information would be received and replied almost immediately. This also had created an unfortunate byproduct of making people more impatient.
Another way technology has affected the way people interact is by how expressive we are and the methods we use. In the past, people had found it to be quite troublesome to express their emotions through letters. To solve this, people had begun writing dramatically and using posh language. This had changed letters to resemble poems rather than a physical conversation written down. Texting, on the other hand, created a new tool to help people express their emotions, which is emojis or emoticons. Emojis were a battering ram into the poem-like writing norm, almost eradicating it by allowing someone to express their feelings using a simple symbol. Furthermore, this had changed how expressive people were in actual physical interactions, as people started speaking and moving more expressively to convey their emotions.
In conclusion, technology has not only changed how we write but also how we talk, evolving into something unrecognizable from the past.
