Usually, the paparazzi prepare their cameras right before an actress or any kind of celebrity walks onto the red carpet. But little do people know, the paparazzi are everywhere. In certain cases, obsession can cause someone to believe that taking a picture of another person without their consent is not a huge problem. This issue will be discussed in this essay. This essay will dig into the gap most people miss regarding the presence of the paparazzi.
On one hand, some believe that taking pictures or being photographed by strangers is one of the disadvantages of being famous. Not to mention, celebrities are public figures. To some public figures, having people who gladly take their photos shows an indication that they are famous. Some even enjoy the feeling, and perhaps the pictures as well.
However, others protest, saying that celebrities are also human. Celebrities deserve privacy in their personal lives. For instance, one of the most popular K-pop (Korean pop) girl groups had to face a lot of criticism just because one of the members, Karina, a young cheerful woman, received a death threat. This happened because she hung out with a man, who was probably her boyfriend. Unfortunately for her, the paparazzi caught them together. As a result, the news spread like wildfire. Karina received funeral flowers, as if she had passed away. To make matters worse, someone even sent her a death threat, saying that she was not loyal to her fans for having a boyfriend. Due to all these events, SM Entertainment decided to file a police report, and she had to cancel various performances because of the impact. Although this example is already terrifying, there are other celebrities who have had to take a hiatus—taking time off from the industry, to fix their image and mental health.
The same goes for ordinary citizens. On one hand, they might not mind being famous and known by many people, or they may even enjoy the fact that someone wants to take a picture of them. On the other hand, some might disagree, stating that it is not appropriate for others to take pictures of them without permission.
With the fact that AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been rapidly developing over the past three years, the use of this technology has become quite diverse. While many people use it for studying or research, the world does not always come with sunshine and rainbows. A small portion of people misuse this technology. For instance, they take pictures and use AI to create inappropriate versions of them, which are then sold on the dark web.
Behind every advantage comes a disadvantage that may result in serious consequences. To sum up everything that has been stated so far, celebrities and citizens alike are human. Whether they agree or disagree with being photographed, consent is required. Therefore, it is important to ask permission without crossing someone’s boundaries. This essay shows that whether the subject agrees with the idea or not, there are advantages and disadvantages. While it may be exciting for someone to take a picture of another person, no one knows exactly where the image will end up or how it will be used. If being photographed by strangers is not an option for someone, the chances of others getting a “free” picture of them should be reduced.
